"The reality is not that I lack respect for the law; it’s that I have greater respect for justice. Where there is a conflict between the law and the higher moral code that we all share, my loyalty is to that higher moral code."

A poll conducted by Elon University during the last week of February, 2013, found that up to 76% of North Carolinians support reforming our state cannabis laws.
It is my opinion that cannabis legalization may be the single most important issue facing our state and our nation today. No other issue addresses health, jobs, climate change, and human rights issues (to name but a few) as does the legalization of cannabis.

Why?
“One day we must ask the question, ‘Why are there forty million poor people in America?’ And when you begin to ask that question, you are raising questions about the economic system, about a broader distribution of wealth. When you ask that question, you begin to question the capitalistic economy. And I’m simply saying that more and more, we’ve got to begin to ask questions about the whole society. We are called upon to help the discouraged beggars in life’s market place. But one day we must come to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. It means that questions must be raised. You see, my friends, when you deal with this, you begin to ask the question, ‘Who owns the oil?’ You begin to ask the question, ‘Who owns the iron ore?’ You begin to ask the question, ‘Why is it that people have to pay water bills in a world that is two thirds water?’ These are questions that must be asked.”
~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Blast From The Past: Don’t Push My Buttons
The content below is an email I received in September of 2008, followed by my knee jerk response written the day I received it four years ago. Lies are persistent little things, and apparently there are now several permutations of this hateful screed still circulating around the network today. Anyway, since I’m more sick of this election cycle than I have ever been of any such event, and can’t bring myself to flog a dead horse anymore, I thought perhaps … Continue reading
“…top marginal tax rate and the top capital gains tax rate do not appear correlated with economic growth…”
The New York Times reported on Thursday that Senate Republicans applied pressure to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) in September, successfully persuading it to withdraw a report finding that lowering marginal tax rates for the wealthiest Americans had no effect on economic growth or job creation. “The pressure applied to the research service comes amid a broader Republican effort to raise questions about research and statistics that were once trusted as nonpartisan and apolitical,” the Times reported. Democrats in Congress, however, have … Continue reading

This Pretty Much Says All We Need To Know About Paul Ryan
”The selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as Romney’s choice for vice president makes it very clear that the Republican Party has completely caved in to the extreme right-wing Tea Party. Ryan, the author of the Republican House budget, would make devastating cuts in Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and education while giving even more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. The Romney-Ryan ticket is waging war against the middle class and must be defeated.” ~ Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) ‘Nuff said.
