THINK!!!

“…the American public is deathly afraid of the kind of changes we actually face – such as, the end of consumer culture, the gross loss of value in suburban real estate (which forms the bulk of the middle class’s private wealth), the prospect of food and fuel scarcities, the need to re-localize our lives, the need to physically shape up to stop the costly and unnecessary drain on our medical resources, to grow more of our own food, to work harder at things that actually matter, and to save whatever we can for a difficult future.” – James Howard Kunstler

Time

“It seems to me, while it’s true that every dog will have his day.
When all the bones are buried there is barely time to go outside and play”
~ Dog Years, Rush

I haven’t had time for writing, or much of anything else in recent weeks. My new job duties take a good bit more time, and considerably more energy than my previous assignment. Odds are after a few months of adjustment things will settle into a less intense routine, but for now my time is limited and posts to this space will remain sparse for a while.

Time is an interesting concept. Remember when you were a kid, how time seemed to drag on forever, especially when you were looking forward to something: Christmas, your birthday, summer vacation, or high school graduation for example. All seemed to take their own sweet time in arriving didn’t they? Continue reading Time

Long Time Coming

Roughly one year ago this week, I quit my old job. When my supervisor told me I could “find somewhere else to work,” if I didn’t like the rules, he didn’t think I’d actually do it. He thought wrong.

At the time, a new company was forming around an ambitious young entrepreneur who had a track record of less than successful start-ups, but each one had been a little better than the last, lasted a little longer, and his most recent endeavor had not failed so much as it had been stolen from him. Most successful small business owners go through a series of early failures before hitting their stride or finding their niche. Continue reading Long Time Coming

Influences

Often I begin or end posts here with a quote or a lyric I find meaning in, so perhaps any discussion of influences should begin by looking at the words, and the people who originated them, that have had some bearing on my life.

Like most people, I’ve had many influences in my life. I look around my world and find I can cite many other influences, some good, others, not so much. Some are people I’ve known, others people I’ve admired from afar, many are not even people at all.

Music has been inspiring me since before I was old enough to understand what many artists were singing about. Human history has been influenced countless times by popular music; consider the protest songs of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Neil Young, and many others from a few generations back. Change is often inevitable, but music has the ability to motivate like nothing else in this world. Continue reading Influences

Those Panentheistic Cosmic Blues

“When you’ve seen beyond yourself then you may find peace of mind is waiting there,
And the time will come when you see we’re all one and life flows on within you and without you.”

“Within You Without You,” The Beatles, lyrics by George Harrison

For many years I struggled, trying to come to grips with my disbelief in Abrahamic monotheism and its fear-based ideologies. It isn’t easy to openly reject what you’ve been taught to believe since childhood, but as Mohandas Gandhi once said, “a ‘No’ uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please.” Once I became convinced of the inherent flaws within the Abrahamic traditions, I had no alternative but to walk away and seek ultimate truth elsewhere. Rest In Peace, Brother Tim

Today I found out my online friend, Timothy O’Donnell, died this past Monday, February 1, 2010. He was only sixty years old. He posted on Facebook as late as 3pm Eastern time that day, so his death must have been as unexpected to those close to him as it was to his online friends.

Too Much Time On My Hands

“Yeah, I’m sittin’ on this bar stool, talkin’ like a damn fool, got the twelve o’clock news blues. And I’ve given up hope on the afternoon soaps and a bottle of cold brew. Is is any wonder I’m not crazy? Is it any wonder I’m sane at all?” ~ Tommy Shaw, Styx

I’m always looking for new ways to generate content for this space. Until a large winter storm hit my region a few days ago (something which doesn’t often happen around here) I hadn’t had much time for writing lately, these last few days I’ve had nothing but time. Unfortunately that will end soon enough and life will get back to the normal drudgery I so enjoy. Continue reading Too Much Time On My Hands

Space – The Last Great Profit Center

It was announced today that NASA’s budget for the Constellation program, which would have ultimately put human beings back on the surface of the moon, has been cut.

In justifying this change in priorities, commentators have noted that NASA has a great track record in unmanned exploration of the solar system, and this is true. Continue reading Space – The Last Great Profit Center
