THINK!!!

“…the American public is deathly afraid of the kind of changes we actually face – such as, the end of consumer culture, the gross loss of value in suburban real estate (which forms the bulk of the middle class’s private wealth), the prospect of food and fuel scarcities, the need to re-localize our lives, the need to physically shape up to stop the costly and unnecessary drain on our medical resources, to grow more of our own food, to work harder at things that actually matter, and to save whatever we can for a difficult future.” – James Howard Kunstler

Why Don’t He Write?

By now my regular readers, all three of them, must have noticed a precipitous drop in both the quantity and quality of my output here. I certainly have and it bothers me, but there seems to be very little I can do about it for the moment. The ideas still flow on an almost daily basis, but I don’t even have time to log them in as shorthand notes to myself. “Just between us
I think it’s time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes fear to show
Just between us
I think it’s time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room for you and I to grow”

~ Entre Nous, Rush, 1980

My blogging has undergone several changes since 2007 when I first began writing on the the web. When I started my first blog, Random Abstractions over on the old blogger site, I used to post about anything and everything, and the site lived up to its name. Continue reading New Directions

The Way of Tao is this: It strives not, but conquers; It speaks not, but all is made clear; It summons not, but its house is crowded; It contrives not, but the design is perfect. ~ Lao Tzu

Another wave of rain is rolling through the region, which means no gainful employment for me today. This would be a major problem for a lot of folks, but I work for a small company with an enlightened CEO who understands that his employees take care of his family and it’s in his interest to take care of his employees.

Anyway, this morning I decided I’d take advantage of the unexpected free time to bang out a new essay or two, or at least get a few rough drafts started, but the Universe said, “No.” Instead I sat here all morning flailing around making the literary equivalent to mud pies. I started five different posts and abandoned each one after less than 100 words. Not my idea of a productive morning. Continue reading This Is Not The Post You Wanted

The Tortured Artist Speaks

I’ve been confined to the house for the last few days, sick with a nasty cold; not my idea of fun, but it did give me a bit of extra time to think and write. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with writing ideas I can’t act on because I can’t quit my day job.

One of the reasons I started blogging was to hone my writing and editing skills, as well as to let some pent up frustrations out in a creative, constructive way. Regular readers know, or should know that my goal, beyond saving the planet and reforming the government, is to someday publish a book. Continue reading The Tortured Artist Speaks

I’ve got several essays started this week, but so far none of them seem relevant to current events, much less ready for publication. I’d really like to write something witty and thought provoking for your reading discomfort, but I’m just not feeling it this morning.

That’s the trouble with full time wage slavery; I get a good groove going, my writing hat starts to fit my head after a few days of productive time with my keyboard, then it’s back to the mindless grind for four ten-hour days at the semi-automated salt mine. There goes my rhythm.
